Nigel Giles of East Devon sent the following information in April 2007.

The Giles family originated in London.

William Giles 1809-1865 was born in South London and married Sussannah Tew from Northaw, Hertfordshire in 1831, he was a tailor.

They had 5 sons and 4 daughters. One of their sons, James was born in St James, Middlesex, London in 1839. He married Eliza Warner from North Petherton in 1859 in Chelsea. He was a Grocer & Beer Seller that entailed him travelling to the West Country and it was in North Petherton that he met Eliza, who was staying at her brother’s public house.

In 1861 they ran the Caulkers Arms, West Ham and in 1871 they had moved to the Boiler Makers Arms also in West Ham (it may have been the same premises re-named)

By 1881 they resided in North Street, Ilminster where James was most likely a grocer they took over the Wheatsheaf in the square in South Petherton with Eliza as the Licensee, James died in 1901 aged 41.

James & Eliza had one son James Simon (my grandfather) who married Minnie Marshalsea of Ilminster. When my grandfather, James Simon, died his wife Minnie took over the licence from her mother in law, Eliza, when she died in 1915. James Simon & Minnie Giles had 4 daughters and 2 sons, one son James Albert died at the age of 8, Ernest, my father, died in 2003 at the age of 101.

Ernest was apprentice to Brooks Garage at Martock and subsequently in the early 30s built the garage and bungalow at Harp Road, Watergore, South Petherton, which he ran until the 1960s, also renting the premises at the bottom of St. James Street next to the Toc H, which is now the village car park; this is where his Venture Coaches were garaged. When Ernest retired, the business was run by his third son, Barry until the building of the Ilminster bye-pass, which entailed the closure of the garage; it was subsequently demolished and rebuilt as a modern filling station by its new owners.

Barry died in 2000.

Eliza Giles born 1888 married William Harvey Stroud and lived in South Petherton for many years in Pitway
